Why does the browser ask for microphone permission?

Your browser must ask for microphone access before any site can record audio — this is a built-in privacy protection. This tool only uses the microphone while you're recording; the mic is released as soon as you press Stop.

What audio format does it record in?

The tool picks the best format your browser supports — usually WebM with Opus audio (Safari uses MP4/AAC). The format is shown next to the recording.
