Frequently asked questions
How is the weighted GPA calculated?
Each course's grade point is multiplied by its credit hours, all those values are added up, and the total is divided by the total credit hours. Example: A (4.0) × 4 credits + B+ (3.3) × 3 credits + C (2.0) × 2 credits = 29.9 grade points ÷ 9 credits = 3.32 GPA.
Do grading scales vary by institution?
Yes — honestly, there is no single universal scale. The 4.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mappings used here are the most common conventions, but your school or university may assign different points to plus/minus grades (for example, some treat A+ as 4.3 on a 4.0 scale). Always check your institution's official scale for anything that matters.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA treats every course equally; a weighted GPA — what this tool computes — gives more influence to courses with more credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.
